‘Dance’ contestants leap to other roles

So You Think You Can Dance competitors have leaped and spun far beyond the Fox dancing competition, which returns for Season 12 Monday (8 p.m. ET/PT).

Contestants have gone on to movies, television series, Broadway and concert tours for top music performers Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

Season 4 runner-up Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who has a weekly gig on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and will appear in July in Magic Mike XXL, credits the series with putting dance at the entertainment forefront, instead of in the background, and raising the profiles of dancers and choreographers.

“You get a chance to see and hear what the dancers think, how they feel. With each different style, you get a peek into their personalities. It helps you fall in love with them,” says Boss, who will serve as mentor on Dance this season. “That love continues and you wonder where they are throughout their career. The casting directors also have an eye for those things.”

Other dancers who have enjoyed post-SYTYCD success include:

• Allison Holker (Season 2), who is married to Boss, finishing second with partner Riker Lynch in Season 20’s Dancing with the Stars. Season 9’s Witney Carson won Season 19 of the ABC dance competition with Alfonso Ribeiro and Season 4’s Chelsie Hightower has also competed on the popular series.
