Fresh from his riotous Cannes success with Foxcatcher, Channing Tatum has turned his thoughts to the Magic Mike sequel and offered up some storyline hints.
The US actor revealed in a recent GQ cover interview that the male exotic dancers will visit a strippers’ convention, inspired by one Tatum attended aged 19 while working as a stripper himself.
“I want to do the story of when I’m in a dark U-Haul with a bunch of these guys and we’re doing drugs driving up the stripper convention,” Tatum told Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh.
Soderburgh decided that was a movie in itself and hence Magic Mike XXL was born.
Tatum continued to recount his past, explaining how thousands of women would come “from miles and miles around” to watch the show: “It gets zany and crazy and it’s a wild ride, an incubator for insanity. It doesn’t matter what you do onstage, it’s mob mentality and absolutely insane.”
Greg Jacobs is set to direct the next movie but Soderbergh will remain involved. “I want to be a part of it. I want to be in the band but I just don’t want to be the frontman this time,” he said.
Magic Mike XXL is scheduled for release next summer.
