ROUND TOP, Texas, March 11 (UPI) — A biannual antiques fair in a Texas town is raising eyebrows with the announcement of a new vendor — a troupe of male strippers.
Stephanie Welch, an organizer with the 47th Original Round Top Antiques Fair, said she was inspired to add the American Cowboy Las Vegas Revue strippers to the April 1-4 event after seeing them perform at another antiques show.
Welch said the tent housing the strippers will only be available to adults over the age of 21. She said the strippers will not be fully nude and no alcohol will be allowed in the tent.
However, some locals said they were shocked by the announcement.
“I see what they’re saying, but then it comes back to me that, that’s not really what really what Round Top is about. Round Top has been about family and enjoying your family and going back to those basics,” Kiki Teague, owner of the Night Bird Ranch bed and breakfast, told KXAN-TV.
“I think that they also have to consider in their demographic search because they’re looking for the women who want to come to this event and I get that, but also this county is 90 percent conservative Republican. This is a fundamentally Christian environment and I can see why people would be a little taken back, maybe a little shocked,” she said.
Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka said he does not approve of the show, but the plans do not violate any laws.
“I find all of it pretty distasteful to begin with, the fact that they’re actually having it on Good Friday and Holy Saturday across the street from the church really makes it distasteful to me and the vast population,” he said.
